Total Solar Eclipse, Grand Canyon, Arizona
The bottom of Grand Canyon contains rocks about 1.5 billion years old, and the canyon itself took several million years to form when the Colorado Plateau rose as the river etched its course. On the 20th of May in 2012 the rim of the canyon was crowded with people and their cameras, all jockeying for a good place to photograph the total solar eclipse. I was no exception, but when the sun was almost completely covered by the moon, my attention was on the way the light still filled the canyon, casting the formations into layers, formations that had been created so long ago.
